PJ Morton returns to gospel roots for NPR’s ‘Tiny Desk’

Featuring cuts from his first gospel album.

Following a wildly successful 2018 debut on NPR’s Tiny Desk, PJ Morton has taken fans back to church in his return to the intimate concert series.

“Today we gon’ do it a little different,” began the singer as he introduced his performance from a studio in his hometown of New Orleans. “We gon’ bring some gospel to Tiny Desk today from my album Gospel According to PJ.” And bring some gospel he did, joined by a talented ten-person band complete with horns and drums, as well as fellow gospel crooners Darrel “Musiqcity” Walls, Zacardi Cortez and J Moss, who made socially distanced appearances through a small TV set.

Morton kicked off the performance with “So in Love,” where Walls and Cortez showcased their vocal chops with breathtaking runs, accompanied by Morton on keys. They then segued smoothly into “All in His Plan” where it was Morton’s turn to shine, finally ending on a high note with “Repay You” featuring J Moss’ soaring delivery.

Gospel According to PJ dropped back in August and marked a return to gospel music for Morton, who has mostly focused on secular tunes in his professional career. Other releases this year include an expanded version of 2018 holiday album Christmas with PJ Morton and The Piano Album in February. The month before, he had appeared on Rapsody’s “Afeni,” which was later remixed by D Smoke.
