Maxwell reckons with social media on “Shame”

Our first taste of the R&B veteran’s new album.

Maxwell has just dropped “Shame,” the world’s first preview of his new album, Night, due next year.

In three sensual minutes, the R&B veteran delivers both an admirable attempt at seduction and a critique of how social media affects relationships: “You were checkin’ out the comments I was leavin’ / Adding letters up, subtracting numbers, jumping to conclusions,” he sings.

Ultimately, Maxwell comes to an unsurprising, if avowedly old-fashioned conclusion: “True love ain’t digital, nah nah / It’s a parallel universe, it’s not real.” Do you agree? Listen to “Shame” below:
