Mary J Blige was one of the musicians who appeared on the recently released Elton John tribute album, Revamp & Restoration, but it looks like that was only the start of their working relationship. The R&B queen just dropped “Stronger Than I Ever Was,” a soulful, funk-fueled track penned by Sir Elton himself.

The song is the perfect blend of soul and spice, with Blige serving confident vocals over the top of a brassy beat. “I’m the queen bee because / I’m stronger than I ever / Stronger than I ever was,” she declares. And by the time the hook kicks in, it’s pretty clear that she’s not taking any prisoners.

Sounds like the recording process was a match made in heaven, too. Sir Elton recounted his experience in the studio tracking the song with Blige: “She said, ‘This is the easiest song for me to sing because it just hits the nail on the head for what I’m going through.’ She sang it in ten minutes.”
