Janelle Monáe has shared a new single called “Turntables,” which will be featured in the upcoming documentary, All in: The Fight for Democracy.
On the fiery anthem, Monáe both sings and raps about changing the world for the better over triumphant beats produced by Nate “Rocket” Wonder. “I’m kicking out the old regime / Liberation, elevation, education / America, you a lie / But the whole world ’bout to testify,” she sings.
Co-directed by Liz Garbus and Lisa Cortés and starring American politician Stacey Abrams, All in: The Fight for Democracy will examine voter suppression in the US and spotlight the activists who have fought against it.
On Instagram, Monáe shared her thoughts on the track, documentary and current social justice movements. “Let’s keep organizing. Liberating. Educating. Elevating,” she wrote. “Let’s keep fighting through the emotional fatigue. Rest when needed. Most importantly let’s keep leaning on each other during this time. Here is some energy in the form of a song revolutionaries. I see you.”
All in: The Fight for Democracy will be available on Amazon Prime Video from September 18 onwards. Last year, Monáe covered “He’s a Tramp” for the remake of the 1955 animated film, Lady and the Tramp. Her last album was 2018’s Dirty Computer, which featured the songs “I Like That” and “Screwed,” among others.
