Brandy has returned with “Freedom Rings,” her first solo track in three years and a cut off her as-yet-untitled seventh studio album.
“Freedom Rings” was released on September 27 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Brandy’s debut self-titled album. On the tell-all track, the ’90s R&B icon tackles expectations from her label and the media, and what it means to find your own freedom.
Over a throbbing bass line and resonant hand-claps, she sings: “I gave you all I had, my love, my blood, my sweat and my time but you wanted more / I invested these years, these tears that I cried / I almost died they tried to change me, chain me, run away declaring my freedom, sings.”
Brandy’s forthcoming album will be her first in seven years, following 2012’s Two Eleven. It’s due out sometime later this year. She previously collaborated with Daniel Caesar on “Love Again,” a song from his latest album Case Study 01.
