Kelly Rowland drops empowering “Crown” visual

Embrace your natural locks.

Kelly Rowland returned to the music game last November when she delivered her self-titled single, “Kelly.” Now, she’s dropped off an empowering new tune, “Crown.”

In the accompanying video, Rowland stars alongside girls of different ethnicities who rock their natural hair for the camera. In the lyrics, the R&B songstress urges female youths to own their looks and not let anybody belittle their ‘crowns.’ “I wear my crown / Show it off, go girl, show it off, go girl / My hair, my crown / Wear it how you want, girl / Show it off, go girl,” she sings on the catchy chorus.

The clip, created in collaboration with Dove, is part of the personal care brand’s movement against hair discrimination. “I love that this campaign is all about instilling confidence in this next generation of girls and encouraging them to stand up to hair stereotypes,” Rowland told Allure in a recent interview.

“I absolutely, absolutely loved every minute, from filming with the girls to just the whole purpose behind it,” she added. “They were so real and authentic with themselves at such a young age, sharing their hair stories and injustices… I was just so inspired, and loved that they reminded me of the little girl in me.”
