Kehlani emerges from her cocoon on “Butterfly”

The song comes off her mixtape, ‘While We Wait,’ out later this month.

Kehlani is gearing up for the release of her upcoming mixtape, While We Wait. She posted to Instagram to let fans know it’ll be out February 22 and also dropped “Butterfly” to hold us over until then.

The smooth R&B tune features Lani singing over a muffled guitar rhythm and soft handclaps, with a poignant spoken word outro detailing how love can break down one’s hard exterior. “I see you duck and dodge at every bend / Afraid to play your card, be forced to show your hand / I hope you take from this that it’ll make you no less of a man / To break your walls and simply grab my hand,” she sings

“Butterfly” is the penultimate song of While We Wait, which also includes “Nights Like This,” and features from Musiq Soulchild and 6LACK, among others. The project, however, is just a quick appetizer from the Kehlani, who plans on releasing a full-length soon after.
