Kaytranada deconstructs Kelela’s “Waitin”

“A remix for your hips,” as she puts it.

Kelela has released Kaytranada’s remix of “Waitin,” off Take Me Apart.

Those who love Kaytranada for his funk-heavy, dancefloor-ready work might be nonplussed by this remix. The Canadian DJ/producer chose to pick apart the uninhibited groove of the original, creating a sparse, undulating bed of sound on which Kelela’s fine-grained vocal performance rests.

On Twitter, Kelela pronounced the track “a remix for your hips,” simultaneously showing her appreciation for her collaborator: “There are some artists I feel kinship with even though we’ve never met. Kaytranada has always been one of those artists to me (for many reasons) and so I feel genuinely ? about this one.”

This comes two weeks after she unveiled the “LMK” remix, which was stacked with rap talent in the form of Cupcakke and Princess Nokia. Both will be included on TAKE ME A_PART, THE REMIXES, a collection of remixes to celebrate Take Me Apart’s first anniversary.
