John Legend gets funky with new tune, “A Good Night”

You’ll swipe right on the song that pleads for the old-school way of meeting a new flame: in a dark club with good tunes and lots of drinks.

There’s something downright cringe-worthy about the lines, “Everything’s gonna be alright / I think I just met my wife.” But when it’s John Legend crooning them in his smooth-as-silk baritone then, well, that’s another matter altogether.

Dropped on Friday, “A Good Night” is Legend’s first solo track since 2017’s “In America.” It’s a funky, disco-tinged number about love at first swipe sight, and comes along with a video—which is essentially an ad for the Google Pixel 2—that imagines what Tinder may look like IRL.

“The song and the video are about a magical night [when] you meet someone you immediately connect with and can envision a future together,” Legend said in an interview. “You’re single, dating, probably using all the apps people use now (I haven’t dated since the advent of Tinder, etc, but it’s a fascinating era in romance), and not finding someone special.

“But one night—maybe caught up in the music or the drinks or whatever—you meet someone that changes everything. That’s a good night!”
