India Arie honors activists of past and present on “What If”

She wonders where the world would be today if not for these African American changemakers.

India Arie honors those who paved the way for the African American community on her uplifting new song, “What If.”

On the powerful track, the Grammy-winning singer pays tribute to trailblazing activists such as Martin Luther King Jr, Malcolm X and Rosa Parks who were instrumental to the civil rights movement in the United States. “What if Martin didn’t stand up / What if Rosa didn’t sit down / What if Malcolm didn’t man up / Where would we be now?” she asks.

She also acknowledges today’s leaders of change in the black community, naming philanthropist Oprah Winfrey, politician Kamala Harris, Academy Award-winning actress Viola Davis and Olympic medalist Serena Williams, among others.
