Record label and music collective 88rising is known for championing up-and-comers in the hip hop and R&B scene. So it came as no surprise when it invited British R&B starlet Ella Mai to appear on its online show, 88 on Air.
The London native took the chance to perform a piano-led version of her chart-topping debut single “Boo’d Up,” giving the ’90s-inspired dance jam a more dramatic vibe. The song recently hit number one on Billboard’s R&B/Hip hop Airplay chart, the first by a lead female R&B act since Rihanna’s “Needed Me” in 2016.
