DAWN has announced her fifth solo album, New Breed, and dropped its alluring, defiant title track.

Over thumping percussion and a bed of synths, the singer—real name Dawn Richard—proclaims herself absolutely uncategorizable and not one to be fucked with. “I am the new breed / But your crown don’t fit me,” she goes, singing one moment and rapping the next. “Imma go beast, Imma go Hulk / Imma Black Panther when I walk.”

In a statement accompanying the track, Richard revealed she “debated about putting out another project because being indie is not easy.” But after returning home to New Orleans, she “realized how much this city has shaped me into the woman I am and how much I missed the girl I was before the industry shit.”

New Breed, which DAWN has dubbed “a small project about what it means to be a ninth ward girl from Jonlee before the industry shit,” also includes the previously released “Jealousy.” The album is out January 25 via Local Action Records/Our Dawn Ent.
