Daniel Caesar is back. Two years after making a splash with his debut album, Freudian, the Toronto crooner has dropped a new album, Case Study 01.

Caesar released the ten-track album at midnight with little fanfare, only announcing a mysterious event in Los Angeles three days ago and teasing the album yesterday on Instagram.

This surprise release packs some heavyweight features, with Brandy singing on “Love Again” and Pharrell free-associating on “Frontal Lobe Muzik” (which was partially co-written by Pharrell’s fellow Neptunes member Chad Hugo). John Mayer also contributes to “Superposition,” while English jazz wunderkind Jacob Collier connects with Caesar and fellow Toronto artist Sean Leon on “Restore the Feeling.”

Caesar posted to Instagram a note he’d written a week before the release of Case Study 01: “The past two years have been crazy and sometimes I wonder if it’s real or if I’ve just gone crazy. Nevertheless, life feels like an adventure and that’s all I ever wanted, really. I’m grateful. Even though I’m sure it comes off at times as if I’m not. I’m trying to be better, I swear I am. It’s all just a big experiment… A case study.” A long list of acknowledgements follows.
