Late last October, obsessed players of the freshly released video game Red Dead Redemption 2 discovered an unexpected Easter egg: a brand-new D’Angelo song, “Unshaken.” Now, the moody track’s finally gotten an official release.
How did the notoriously reclusive neo-soul icon, whose last full-length release was 2014’s Black Messiah, end up contributing a song to the smash hit from Rockstar Games? As it turns out, D’Angelo is a “massive, massive, massive fan of the game—more than I ever knew,” Ivan Pavlovich, Rockstar’s director of music and audio, told Rolling Stone.
The Voodoo artist was such a fan of Red Dead Redemption 2, Pavlovich said, that he would show up to Rockstar’s office to play the game for hours on end. “When D’Angelo comes through, he shows up at midnight, and he’s playing the game until four in the morning,” the video game exec said. “Each time he was just like, ‘It’s incredible.’ It just blows his mind. He’s such a fan. I have never seen someone that excited.”
