August Alsina channels Kanye on “Wouldn’t Leave”

His first solo effort since 2015’s ‘This Thing Called Life.’

August Alsina has finally broken his silence with a brand-new offering, “Wouldn’t Leave”—and if you find it familiar, that’s because the R&B star’s borrowed Kanye West’s song of the same name.

Alsina’s rework of the Kim Kardashian-inspired Ye cut, doesn’t alter much. It offers the same downtempo rhythm, switching up the digital percussion on the original with shimmering synths and an intimate piano arrangement. Like West, who addressed his wife on his song, Alsina dedicates his verses to his lover: “The more I fought to leave, the more you fought to stay / I guess ’cause there’s a will then we’ll find a way.”

The drop is accompanied by a sunset-soaked music video, directed by Alsina alongside Christopher Scholar. In it, the singer wanders through a deserted town as he ponders the uncertainty of his relationship.
