Ari Lennox, Anthony Ramos cover “If You Want Me To Stay”

A funky rendition of Sly and the Family Stone’s 1973 classic.

Ari Lennox and Hamilton star Anthony Ramos have teamed up on a captivating cover of Sly and the Family Stone’s 1973 classic, “If You Want Me To Stay.”

The duo showcase their soulful powerhouse vocals on the groovy rendition, which mostly stays faithful to the original. “If you want me to stay, I’ll be around today / To be available for you to see / But I’m about to go and then you’ll know / For me to stay here, I got to be me,” Lennox sings on the opening lines.

“It’s always tricky when you’re recreating a song that is so well-known, but I tried to stay as authentic as possible to my own sound and voice, while also honoring Sly and respecting the original art,” Lennox told Atwood Magazine about the cover.

“We just tried to figure out what we were feeling,” added Ramos. “We tried to stay true to the melody and true to the song as best we could. At the same time, we wanted to give it our own flavor.”

The pair have also joined forces with Crown Royal to help communities affected by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The company pledges to l donate $1 for every steam of the song, up to $500,000.

“If You Want Me To Stay” follows several releases from Lennox this year, including “Bussit” and a remix EP of her debut album Shea Butter Baby. On the other hand, Ramos is set to star in the upcoming action film Honest Thief, alongside Liam Neeson.
