Amerie drops two surprise projects

‘4AM Mulholland’ and ‘After 4AM’ arrived late last week.

Who saw this coming? Late last week, R&B artist Amerie—of “1 Thing” fame—dropped two twin projects, 4AM Mulholland and After 4AM.

These releases come two years after her last release, the Drive EP, and almost a decade after her last full-length album, In Love & War. The versatile artist has spent some time away from music—in recent years, she’s developed a healthy career as a novelist—but these new songs fit perfectly in the contemporary R&B landscape. Fans of the more nocturnal, sensual side of the genre (think Tinashe’s Amethyst and Nightride) should check these Amerie projects out.

Making 4AM Mulholland and After 4AM was “really creatively freeing” for Amerie, as she recorded and engineered her own vocals and rough mixes. “As I was recording, I wasn’t trying to limit myself in any way. I was feeling very, very creative—I had just came off of writing a new story and I wanted to go full-out into the recording process,” she told Billboard. “I didn’t want the album to be a smorgasbord of sounds, it needs to have a vibe and that’s why there’s two projects.”
