Alicia Keys has released an emotional new song titled “Perfect Way to Die.”
Co-written and -produced by Keys, alongside Sebastian Kole, the heartbreaking track is an aching plea to end police violence and prejudice against African Americans. “Another dream lost / Another king and queen lost / Another broken promise they refuse to make right / Oh, another night to live in fear / Oh, another night that you’re not here / Another reason to get out there and fight,” she sings on the bridge.
“Of course there is no perfect way to die. This phrase doesn’t even make sense but that’s what makes the title so powerful and heartbreaking because so many have died unjustly,” Keys explained in a statement. “It’s written from the point of view of the mother whose child has been murdered because of the system of racism that looks at Black life as unworthy. We all know none of these innocent lives should have been taken due to the culture of police violence.”
Prior to this, Keys performed new music from her upcoming album at NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series. Her new record, titled ALICIA, was slated to drop in March this year but was pushed back due to the ongoing pandemic. A new release date for the album has not been confirmed.
