Zooey Deschanel gets mistaken for Katy Perry in the pop star’s music video for the Smile cut, “Not the End of the World.”
Helmed by director duo Similar But Different, the whimsical clip plays on the long-running joke about Perry and Deschanel being doppelgängers. In it, Deschanel tries to convince a group of aliens that she isn’t Perry after they accidentally abduct the actress.
But after several failed attempts, Deschanel eventually gives in and dons the singer’s iconic blue wig before throwing a huge dance party in space.
In an Instagram Live session prior to the music video premiere, Perry revealed to Deschanel that she used to pretend to be the actress to enter clubs. “When I [first] came to LA, I was pretty much a nobody, and you were just getting so huge at that time,” the singer told Deschanel. “It was like Zooey Deschanel ran the world. … In that moment, I was so complimented to look like you. Sometimes I would pose as you to get into the club.”
Perry released her sixth studio album, Smile, in August. It included tracks like “Never Really Over,” “What Makes a Woman,” “Harleys in Hawaii” and “Smile.” Last month, she released a cover of “I’ll Be Home For Christmas/Cozy Little Christmas,” as part of The Disney Holiday Singalong special.
