Years & Years, now the solo project of vocalist Olly Alexander, is back with new single “Starstruck.”
On the infectious bop, the British pop artist sings about infatuation. “I feel like all these people in this room don’t shine like you,” he declares. “If I could bottle you up / I would sip ya like cosmic juice.”
It’s a promising first taste of Years & Years’ new era—one they announced last month in a statement on social media. “This upcoming new album has been an Olly endeavour and we’ve decided that Years & Years will continue as an Olly solo project,” the trio of Alexander, Mikey Goldsworthy and Emre Türkmen wrote.
“The three of us are still good friends. Mikey will be part of the Y&Y family and play with us live and Emre will focus on being a writer/producer.”
In a new interview, Alexander said that the three of them had “kind of grown apart musically,” and that the band becoming his solo project “had been a long time coming.”
“We all got into a new way of living our lives and working together quite separately,” he told Capital FM. “And then after the pandemic, I feel like we had all this time to really reflect on what was going on and it made sense that we kind of went our separate ways.”
“Starstruck” is the first original Years & Years material to be released in 2021. Earlier this year, they covered Pet Shop Boys’ “It’s a Sin”—which shares a title with the hit television show Alexander recently starred in. That came after Years & Years collaborated with Pet Shop Boys on the single “Dreamland” in 2019.
