Billie Eilish has returned with a brand-new single, “Therefore I Am.”
The song is built around French philosopher René Descartes’ famous phrase, “I think, therefore, I am”—or “cogito ergo sum” in its original Latin form. The pop star sings about fake friends and rebukes them for trying to ride on her coattails: “I’m not your friend or anything / Damn, you think that you’re the man / I think, therefore, I am.”
The accompanying music video was self-directed by Eilish, much like her other recent visuals, such as Not My Responsibility and “Everything I Wanted.” It follows the singer as she roams around an empty mall, shot at the Glendale Galleria in California, while helping herself to free pretzels and fries.
It’s currently unknown if “Therefore I Am” will be part of a bigger project from Eilish, or if it’s a standalone single like July’s “My Future.” The singer’s last album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, was released in March 2019.
