Lady Gaga gave a powerful performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” during the recent inauguration of President Joe Biden.
On January 20, the Grammy-winning pop star launched the ceremony with an impassioned gospel rendition of the US national anthem, backed by the Marine Band. As she belted, “O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave,” Gaga glanced at the flag before turning to the crowd and emphasizing the next line: “O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.”
Other pop singers who performed at Biden’s inauguration included Jennifer Lopez and Justin Timberlake. Lopez sang a medley of Woody Guthrie’s “This Land is Your Land” and the patriotic anthem “America the Beautiful,” which was popularized by Ray Charles. Timberlake, on the other hand, teamed up with Ant Clemons for a remote performance of their song “Better Days.”
Meanwhile, Katy Perry closed out the ceremony with an emotional performance of “Firework,” which was completed with a stunning pyrotechnics display.
Prior to her performance, Gaga tweeted that participating in the historic event was an “honor.” “I will sing during a ceremony, a transition, a moment of change—between POTUS 45 and 46. For me, this has great meaning,” she wrote.
“My intention is to acknowledge our past, be healing for our present, and passionate for a future where we work together lovingly,” Gaga added. “I will sing to the hearts of all people who live on this land.”
