Selena Gomez hops on remix of Trevor Daniel’s “Past Life”

The song explores toxic relationships.

Trevor Daniel has teamed up with Selena Gomez for a remix of his latest single, “Past Life.”

The pensive song details a heartbreak and the struggle to move on from toxicity—in both a romantic and personal sense. “Last night was the last time, was the last time / I’ll never let you figure me out / Sitting here, talking to myself / Thinking how I used to use you / Only thing I’m used to / Last night was the last night of my past life,” Gomez and Daniel brood on the chorus, over a mid-tempo production and synth pop beats.

In a Twitter video, Gomez said the song’s narrative resonated with her the moment she heard it. “I loved the fact that it was kind of like a story about all the things that we tend to hold onto and the patterns that we have. And I’m very, very vocal about my personal experiences making decisions that aren’t necessarily healthy for me,” she said.

Earlier this year, Gomez released her third studio album, Rare, which included the singles “Look at Her Now,” “Lose You to Love Me” and “Dance Again.” Daniel’s original version of “Past Life” dropped in March, following his 2019 EP Restless and 2018 debut EP Homesick, which included the viral hit “Falling.”
