Selena Gomez, Trevor Daniel drop surreal “Past Life” remix video

A creative quarantine visual.

Selena Gomez and Trevor Daniel have released a mesmerizing video for their latest collab, the remix of “Past Life.”

The clip is directed by Vania Heymann and Gal Muggia, the Grammy-nominated pair behind Coldplay’s 2016 “Up&Up” video and Tove Lo’s fantastical “Glad He’s Gone” visual. The new video starts off relatively simple: the singers connect with each other over Instagram Live and begin to duet.

But as soon as the sentimental chorus kicks in, the visual zooms into Gomez’s face and morphs her facial features into meteor craters, desert plains, lakes and mountains, taking viewers on a breathtaking trip through nature. “Last night was the last night of my past life / Got me here like you could never figure me out,” they sing.

The original cut of “Past Life” appeared on Daniel’s March debut album Nicotine, before Gomez hopped on the remix last month. In a statement, the pop star said that Daniel’s song had resonated with her strongly. “I loved the fact that it was kind of like a story about all the things that we tend to hold onto and the patterns that we have,” she said. “And I’m very, very vocal about my personal experiences making decisions that aren’t necessarily healthy for me.”

Gomez dropped her third studio LP, Rare, earlier this year, while Daniel is already gearing up to release a follow-up to Nicotine.
