Sam Smith covers Cyndi Lauper for new live album

Their rendition of “Time After Time” is Lauper-approved.

Sam Smith has unveiled their cover of Cyndi Lauper’s 1983 classic “Time After Time.”

The English singer’s rendition of the iconic new wave hit stays largely faithful to the original, though they lend the tune a soft, passionate touch with their emotive vocals. ““If you’re lost you can look / And you will find me / Time after time,” they croon.

In a 20-minute “In Conversation” video with Lauper released alongside the cover, the American singer-songwriter gave Smith’s rendition her stamp of approval. “When I was listening to your string arrangement, there were those wonderful, glorious romps through it, and that makes it almost spiritual,” she said.

Smith’s cover of “Time After Time” appears on their new live album Love Goes: Live at Abbey Road Studios. The record also features renditions of songs from their 2020 LP, Love Goes, as well as older hits like “Stay With Me” and “Too Good at Goodbyes.”
