Rina Sawayama wants her date to “STFU!” in new video

The singer’s had enough microaggressions.

Rina Sawayama has returned with a rage-filled video for her new, nu metal-inspired single, “STFU!”

In the clip, the British singer suffers through a cringe-worthy date with comedian Ben Ashenden, who barrages her with insensitive comments about Japanese culture and racist comparisons to Sandra Oh and Lucy Liu. Sawayama loses her cool and transforms into a long-haired pop vixen, finally telling her date to “shut the fuck up.”

“As a Japanese girl growing up in the West, I dealt with an array of aggressors,” Sawayama explained in a press statement. “Ranging from sexual stereotypes, comparisons with Lucy Liu and Cho Chang… to people shouting Asian greetings down the street and finally to people doing “slit eyes.’”

“STFU!” is Sawayama’s first release of the year, and her first release on her new label Dirty Hit. The track is the first single from her as-yet-untitled debut album, due out next year.
