Rina Sawayama celebrates her “Chosen Family” on new song

Dedicated to her LGBTQ+ family.

Rina Sawayama has unveiled an uplifting new track, “Chosen Family.”

On the emotional ballad, the singer pays tribute to the people whom she has come to depend on as family, even if they aren’t related by blood. “So what if we don’t look the same? / We been going through the same thing / Yeah, you are, you are / My chosen, chosen family,” she sings.

“‘Chosen Family’ is a very special song for me,” Sawayama said in a press statement. “The concept of a chosen family is, to me, a queer one—people are often kicked out of their homes or ostracized by their family, friends, and community after coming out. This can be an incredibly painful experience that can be remedied by finding a new ‘chosen’ family.”

“I dedicate this song to my queer friends who I now consider family—it’s essentially a big thank you to them, as I love them so much and I genuinely don’t think I would be alive right now if it weren’t for them,” she added.

“Chosen Family” will appear on Sawayama’s forthcoming debut album, SAWAYAMA. Other songs on the record include “STFU!,” “XS” and “Comme des Garçons (Like the Boys).”

SAWAYAMA is due out April 17 via Dirty Hit. Listen to “Chosen Family” below:
