OneRepublic have surprise-released “Better Days,” a hopeful song the group wrote over the last few days while being self-quarantined.

“Oh, I know that there’ll be better days / Oh, that sunshine ‘bout to come my way,” frontman Ryan Tedder sings on the chorus of the timely and optimistic song.

“We were in the final week of our fifth album deadline when a global pandemic was declared by the WHO. A few of us unknowingly got exposed to somebody with COVID-19 in London and ended up in quarantine in LA at my studio for two weeks,” Tedder shared in a press statement. “With only two songs left to finish, one of them happened to be ‘Better Days.’”

“We write about real experiences and events that happen to us—this is what happens when you write a song during a crisis,” he added.

The uplifting track is expected to appear on OneRepublic’s upcoming fifth studio record, Human. The album includes previously released songs “Rescue Me” and “Wanted.”

From now to September 2020, a portion of the streaming revenue from “Better Days” will be donated to the COVID-19 Relief Fund by the MusiCares Foundation, the charity arm of the Recording Academy, to help artists trying to make ends meet during this pandemic.
