After taking a hiatus during the pandemic, the popular BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge series finally returned yesterday with a performance by Miley Cyrus, who covered Billie Eilish’s latest single, “My Future.”
Cyrus’ smoky vocals elevated Eilish’s tender ballad into a funky number with influences from swing and jazz. “’Cause I, I’m in love / With my future / Can’t wait to meet her / And I, I’m in love / But not with anybody else,” she belted on the chorus.
Later, Cyrus breathed new life into two of her own songs, “Midnight Sky” and 2019’s “Slide Away,” giving the former a rockier treatment and the latter an emotional acoustic take. The pop star had also presented a cover of “Take it to the Limit” by the Eagles, but the performance is unfortunately not yet available on BBC’s official YouTube page.
In a tweet, Cyrus said that her Eagles cover was dedicated specially to her grandma. “The Eagles were my Mammies favorite band…. and my mama grew up singing this song on drives in the car w her mom! This is in honor of my grandma,” she wrote. Check out a snippet of the performance here.
Cyrus is currently working on a follow-up to her 2019 six-track project, She is Coming. More details about her upcoming release have not yet been announced, so stay tuned.
