Mariah Carey returns with “GTFO”

Mimi bids goodbye to a man who took her for granted.

“How ’bout you… get the fuck out?” Mariah Carey’s new song, “GTFO,” could not be more to the point.

“GTFO,” as you might expect, is Mimi’s leisurely kiss-off to an “unjustly handsome” lover who “left [her] lost and disenchanted.” The track is a smooth, slightly bittersweet listen, partly thanks to shimmery production by the Grammy Award-nominated Nineteen85 and his canny sampling of Porter Robinson’s “Goodbye to a World.”

The song is the world’s first glimpse of the elusive chanteuse’s new studio album, due later this year. Carey wanted to make it “a first listen that wasn’t so serious,” she said in a press release. “I’ve had so much fun making this album, and I wanted the first moment to reflect that light-hearted spirit.”

In the music video, Carey lounges around a blessedly empty house in expensive lingerie, wine glass in hand, singing straight to the camera—so there’s no misconstruing her message.
