Madonna recruits Mykki Blanco for powerful “Dark Ballet” MV

Madonna has unveiled a video for her new single, “Dark Ballet,” which is inspired by the story of Joan of Arc.

The Emmanuel Adjei-directed clip stars Mykki Blanco as the historical figure who was the target of religious persecution. Despite her best efforts to fend off detractors, she is eventually captured and burned at the stake. Madonna herself does not appear in the visual.

“[Joan of Arc] fought the English and she won, still the French were not happy,” Madonna said in a press release. “Still they judged her. They said she was a man, they said she was a lesbian, they said she was a witch and, in the end, they burned her at the stake, and she feared nothing. I admire that.”

“Dark Ballet” is the latest release from Madonna’s forthcoming studio album, Madame X, following “Crave” with Swae Lee, “I Rise” and “Medellín,” featuring Maluma. It drops this Friday.
