Disney star and rising pop artist Olivia Rodrigo has released her debut single, “Drivers License.”
Penned by Rodrigo and As Tall as Lions member Dan Nigro, who also produced the song, “Drivers License” is a stirring piano ballad about moving on from a relationship that no longer exists. The song builds on Rodrigo’s emotions, snowballing into a heartbreaking and explosive bridge.
“Red lights, stop signs / I still see your face in the white cars, front yards / Can’t drive past the places we used to go to / ’Cause I still fuckin’ love you, babe,” Rodrigo cries out.
Shortly after the release, “Drivers License” became the number one song on Spotify’s global Top 50 chart, after topping the US charts on Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music. Taylor Swift, whom Rodrigo has long admired, also took notice of the song’s popularity, singing praises of the young star. “I say that’s my baby,” Swift commented on Instagram. “And I’m really proud.”
“Drivers License” is Rodrigo’s official debut track. The 17-year-old had previously written original songs for the Disney+ show, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, which she also stars in. The subject of “Drivers License” is rumored to be about her co-star, Joshua Bassett.
“Drivers License” is expected to appear on Rodrigo’s first EP, out later this year. The song dropped alongside an equally bittersweet music video that stars the singer driving alone on empty streets. Check it out below:
