Lady Gaga has gone back to basics with her sumptuous rendition of Elton John’s “Your Song,” which was released Thursday. No bombastic production, no complex arrangement, no fixing what ain’t broke—Gaga’s interpretation of the immortal tune is all about her flaunting the commanding pipes she always had.
Gaga sticks to the original’s piano-led instrumentation but changes the tone to one of defiance. It certainly isn’t as electrifying as the diva’s more famous tunes, yet there’s her trademark strength and grace that runs under the ballad’s saccharine lyrics. Even Sir Elton himself called the cover “absolutely incredible.”
The cover will appear on Revamp, a tribute album for Elton John and his lifelong collaborator Bernie Taupin. The record features some of the biggest names in the pop world today, such as Ed Sheeran, Coldplay, Miley Cyrus and Queens of the Stone Age. It drops later this week.
