The pop star opened her nearly ten-minute-long set with the interlude “Chromatica II,” before quickly transitioning into a funky but truncated version of fan favorite “911.” It then cut to “Rain on Me,” Gaga’s hit collab with Grande. The duo delivered pitch-perfect vocals (with Grande hitting a spectacular whistle note) while performing intense choreography cut straight from the song’s music video. The set also followed the same futuristic, pink-purple aesthetic of the visual.
Gaga then cooled things down with a soulful piano rendition of “Stupid Love,” but soon returned to the main stage to finish up the night with a rockier version of the track, backed up by a troupe of dancers. Throughout the performance, Gaga and all her dancers wore elaborate face masks designed by Cecilio Castrillo.
Gaga swept the VMAs 2020 with “Rain on Me,” which nabbed Song of the Year, Best Cinematography and Best Collaboration. She also won Artist of the Year, plus the brand-new MTV Tri-con Award.
