Kesha releases “Here Comes the Change”

A folk-pop song with a powerful message.

Kesha’s back with a new track called “Here Comes the Change,” the lead single from the soundtrack to the upcoming movie On the Basis of Sex.

The film’s based on the life of trailblazing Supreme Court judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg—so it’s no wonder Kesha’s written a protest song with an important message.

The folksy, guitar-led “Here Comes the Change” calls for full equality for everyone, and serves as a reminder that everyone has the power to make a difference. In an essay for Refinery29 accompanying the single, Kesha writes, “If we don’t participate, if we don’t make our voices heard, things will only get worse.”

“It’s hard, I know it’s hard / To be the lightning in the dark,” she sings over a gentle acoustic strum. “Hold on tight, you’ll be alright / You know it’s time / Here comes the change.” As the track goes on, a ’60s-style harmonica riff kicks in, and a chorus of gospel singers joins Kesha. Talk about sending a message.
