Kelly Clarkson yesterday unveiled the video for “I Don’t Think About You,” the second single from her eighth album, Meaning of Life.
The clip’s almost a retrospective of the pop star’s personal life. While scenes of her troubled childhood, adolescent heartbreaks, and woes as a struggling musician flash by, present-day Clarkson stands proudly on a pedestal in a flood-lit room. She’s singing her lungs out to no one but herself, putting on a defiant yet vulnerable show.
And, in the final sequence, all her younger personas gather on the pedestal and coalesce into the Clarkson we know today ???. The whole, the tune suggests, is way bigger than the sum of its parts.
“‘I Don’t Think About You’ is the moment you realize something has no power over you anymore,” she explained. “We all have people and situations in life that mold us and sometimes those situations can feel like they’re about to break us, but this song is about that morning you wake up and you don’t even think about it anymore. It holds no power, no weight in your world, and consumes your thoughts no longer. It’s a song about freedom, honestly.”
