Katy Perry announces new album with title track “Smile”

Her sixth studio album is finally on the way.

Katy Perry has announced her new album Smile with the release of its anthemic title track.

“I wrote the title track from the album when I was coming through one of the darkest periods of my life and had lost my smile,” Perry explained on Twitter. “This whole album is my journey towards the light—with stories of resilience, hope, and love.”

The pop superstar coupled this release with details of her highly anticipated album. In a virtual interview with 7 News, Perry shared that she battled depression after the release of her last record Witness, and her mental health struggles influenced the upcoming record.

“I became very insecure and had to go on a journey, both emotionally, spiritually, and psychologically to understand why I relied so much on validation,” she said. “I had to realize that everything related to my career isn’t all of what life is, it’s just a part of who I am. I really went through that journey and a lot of beautiful songs came from it.”

Prior to “Smile,” Perry released the songs “Daisies,” “Never Wore White,” “Harleys in Hawaii” and “Never Really Over,” all of which will be included on Smile’s tracklist. “Small Talk,” which she released in August, does not appear to be on the new record.

Smile is slated to drop on August 14. While you wait, stream its title track here:
