Julia Michaels’ introspective new EP tackles anxiety, old flames

‘Inner Monologue Part 1’ features contributions from Selena Gomez and Niall Horan.

Julia Michaels has released Inner Monologue Part 1, the follow-up to her 2017 major label debut EP, Nervous Systems. The new record features six songs, including collabs with Selena Gomez and Niall Horan.

Opening the EP is “Anxiety,” Michaels and Gomez’s acoustic duet that sheds light on mental health. “[It’s] not just [about] anxiety, but the fear of missing out,” Michaels said in an interview with Zane Lowe of Beats 1, which premiered the track. “[It’s] sort of wanting to do things but never actually having the ability to go through with anything that you want to do.”

On the other hand, the Horan-assisted album closer “What a Time” is a soaring pop ballad produced by RKCB. The song was previewed during Michaels’ opening set for Maroon 5’s Red Pill Blues tour, where she originally performed it solo.

Elsewhere on Inner Monologue Part 1, Michaels reflects on past relationships (“Into You”), searches for contentment (“Happy”) and relearns how to fall in love (“Deep”).
