Elton John has added his magic to Rina Sawayama’s 2020 song “Chosen Family.”
The singer penned “Chosen Family” with producer Danny L Harle for her debut album Sawayama, which arrived last April. In an earlier press statement, Sawayama explained that she wrote the song with her LGBTQ+ family in mind, some of whom were shunned by friends and family after coming out.
Sawayama and John transform the electronic-tinged ballad into a timeless piano-led classic. They trade verses on the new version, with John lending his piano chops and experience as a longtime cultural advocate for LGBTQ+ rights to the uplifting song.
“It was such a joy and honor to rework ‘Chosen Family’ with the legendary Elton John,” Sawayama gushed in a statement. “The song means so much to both of us, and recording it together was such a special experience I will never forget. I got shivers when I heard his voice through the monitor and became emotional when he added the piano parts. Elton has been such a huge supporter from before the album, and when we finally met to record this song we clicked from the get go. I hope people can hear the magic!”
