Hear Aly & AJ’s explicit rework of “Potential Breakup Song”

“It took too long, it took too long,” but it’s finally here.

Aly & AJ have returned with an explicit version of their 2007 hit, “Potential Breakup Song.”

The full track remains faithful—unlike the song’s subject—to the original, with slightly more polished production and smoother, rounder vocals. Most crucially, however, some choice words have been added at several points to really dial up the angst of the break-up anthem. “It took too long for you to call back / And normally I would just forget that / Except for the fact it was my birthday / My fuckin’ birthday,” the duo open on the track.

Later in the song, they’re also noticeably more aggressive when asking for their possessions back from their ex-partner: “Now all I want is just my stuff back / Do you get that? / Let me repeat that / I want my shit back.” Finally, the song’s bridge has also been punched up: “So you better think clearly, clearly / Before you nearly, nearly / Fuck up the situation that you’re gonna miss dearly, dearly.”

Earlier this year, “Potential Breakup Song” gained a new lease of life as the soundtrack to a viral TikTok trend, in which users lip-synced to its opening verse while pretending to scorn a disappointing boyfriend. The sisters had previously told Us Weekly in August that the tune deserved a “facelift,” something they’ve more than delivered on.

The updated “Potential Breakup Song” follows the sister duo’s latest single “Slow Dancing” at the start of this month. Per Paper Mag, they plan to put out one single a month in lead up to their upcoming album, due out in spring. The record will follow their previous project Sanctuary which contained the tracks “Star Maps,” “Don’t Go Changing” and “Church,” and will also be their first full-length since 2018’s Ten Years.
