Hayley Williams laments heartbreak on “Why We Ever”

Another taste of her upcoming solo record.

Hayley Williams has released “Why We Ever,” the ninth preview track from her forthcoming debut solo record, Petals for Armor.

“I spent the weekend at home again / Drawing circles on the floor / Tried to keep myself from hurting / I don’t know why anymore,” Williams sings plaintively on the song.

Prior to the track’s release, the Paramore frontwoman shared clips on Instagram of its genesis two years ago, accompanied by a caption that detailed the process.

“in Dec 2018, i bought protools, an interface, and some speakers and decided to learn something new. these moments are from my first go at it (we’re talking out of time/phase/tune… etc!)… i was at the lowest point i’d been in some time. my sadness shows,” the singer revealed.

“now i look back and credit this night as being the beginning of a new season of my life, where i hold myself accountable for learning to love better. i’ve let myself down a lot in love. this was the start of recognizing bad patterns and acknowledging that i’m ready to grow out of them.”

“Why We Ever” will appear on Petals for Armor, which drops on May 8. The LP will include previously released tracks “My Friend,” “Over Yet,” “Roses/Lotus/Violet/Iris” and all five songs from the Petals for Armor I EP which was released in February. Earlier this month, Williams also shared a delicate cover of Phoebe Bridgers’ “Smoke Signals.”
