Hayley Williams drops surprise album, ‘Flowers for Vases/Descansos’

Arriving less than a year after the Paramore vocalist’s solo debut, ‘Petals for Armor.’

Hayley Williams of Paramore has released her second solo album, Flowers for Vases/Descansos.

The 14-track record arrives less than a year after Williams made her highly anticipated solo debut with Petals for Armor. Whereas her Paramore bandmates contributed to that record, Williams wrote every part and played all instruments on Flowers for Vases herself.

Williams recorded Flowers for Vases in her home studio while under lockdown—a setting you can hear in the instrumentation, which is quieter and more stripped-down than the energetic electronic-leaning pop of Petals for Armor.

The new songs, however, share the themes of Petals: namely, grief, trauma and pain. “I’m still having to remind myself that you just don’t write a song and then you’re through it,” Williams told American Songwriter in a recent interview. “It keeps happening to you, and with you, and for you, in some cases.”
