Hayley Williams shares heartfelt Phoebe Bridgers cover

The Paramore frontwoman has put her own spin on “Smoke Signals.”

Hayley Williams took to Instagram yesterday to share a stirring rendition of Phoebe Bridgers’ song “Smoke Signals.”

The acoustic cover was a special tribute for the Paramore frontwoman’s friend and collaborator, Lindsey Byrnes, who had lost her father recently.

“Woke up today a lil heavy. didn’t know why, just some days are like that. but then realized i am inextricably connected to my friend @lindseybyrnes who’s sweet father just passed away,” Williams said on Instagram.

“One of her favs is Phoebe Bridgers so this self-serenade is actually for her since i can’t hang with her or hug her tight,” she added. The singer also encouraged fans to check in with each other during this time of quarantine, because “our connection to each other defies space and time.”

Williams’ cover of the Bridgers song comes shortly after she released “Roses/Lotus/Violet/Iris,” which features Bridgers’ band boygenius on backing vocals. That song, plus Williams’ latest single “Over Yet,” will appear on her debut solo record, Petals For Armor, due out May 8 on Atlantic. Williams released the first part of the album as an EP in February.
