Halsey pays tribute to her “badass idols” with a video for her new song, “You Should Be Sad.”
In the accompanying clip, the singer pays homage to pop stars who came before her. The visual features Halsey in a sweaty hoedown, à la Christina Aguilera’s “Dirty,” and crying tears of glitter in a reference to Carrie Underwood’s Cry Pretty album cover. Later in the clip, she reemerges as a blonde riding a white horse, the scene recalling Lady Gaga’s look on the red carpet at the 2013 American Music Awards.
But most importantly, the video features homages to two iconic Shania Twain outfits from her videos for “That Don’t Impress Me Much” and “Man! I Feel Like a Woman.”
“Xtina, Gaga, Carrie and of course Shania, this was one loaded with nods to badass idols of mine,” Halsey wrote on Twitter. “Had the vision to do a ‘Before He Cheats’ but instead about after he does.”
“You Should Be Sad” is the latest preview of Halsey’s third studio album, Manic, which arrives January 17. Other songs on the record include “Finally // Beautiful Stranger,” “Graveyard” and “Clementine.”
