Grimes drops demo for new song, “Pretty Dark”

The singer says it’s “not a single” but part of her upcoming augmented reality musical project.

Synth pop artist Grimes has released a demo of “Pretty Dark,” a track from an upcoming augmented reality (AR) musical project.

The Canadian singer performs the experimental pop song as “Dark,” a character from her AR project. “Wish you were impaled / And injured with love the way I am / You would cry when you say my tears / The way I cry when I see yours,” she sings.

She explained her new AR project in the video’s YouTube description: “[Gonna] start making AR (or illustrated?) ‘sub-members’ within Grimes. The art angels, as it were. Kinda like the [South Korean girl group Loona’s] sub-bands [crossed with] the Gorillaz? Psychedelic post-K-pop-ish fake band for my non-Grimes musical ventures.”

“They are the main characters from the book/musical I’m working on. I’m bored of being so precious about music and also feeling boxed in by the Grimes branding, and I have this whole other world that’s really fun to write for,” she added.

“Pretty Dark” and the AR project aren’t Grimes’ first foray into the K-pop world. Last May, she collaborated with Loona on “love4eva.”
