Grab some tissues for Billie Eilish’s “when the party’s over”

A deeply lonely ballad.

Billie Eilish has released another new song, “when the party’s over.”

Eilish digs deep within herself for the track, which features hardly more than a few choice effects and keys. “Quiet when I’m coming home and I’m on my own / And I could lie, say, ‘I like it like that, like it like that,’” she sings, her voice feather-light. You can almost imagine the teen seated at a piano in the aftermath of a house party, tapping out the melody and singing quietly to herself.

The song is “kind of” a sequel to “party favor,” the faux-playful ukulele-centric track from her 2017 project dont smile at me, Eilish said in an interview with Coup de Main Magazine earlier this year.

She explained the song a bit further: “It’s like, ‘I’ll call you when the party’s over,’ you’re on the phone with someone and you can’t hear them, they can’t hear you, it’s loud, they’re mad at you for some reason. I feel like everybody’s had that struggle with someone—somebody on the phone yelling for some reason, and you’re just like, ‘You know what? Fucking leave me alone.’”
