GFriend cast a spell with disco-inspired song, “Mago”

A retro-themed comeback.

GFriend have dropped “Mago,” the lead single from their third full-length album 回: Walpurgis Night.

“Mago” (‘magician’ in Spanish), was co-written by members Eunha, Yuju and Umji, alongside hitmaker FRANTS and the group’s Big Hit label boss Bang Si Hyuk. Over the swirling, disco-inspired production, GFriend proclaim they aren’t afraid to be who they are: “Mago, mago / Go on and judge me now / I won’t ever waiver / Mago, mago / Dance a dance for me / The night goes, tic tak tic tak / Feel so high.”

“We wanted to declare ourselves as witches unbothered by what other people say or think, expressing our honest desires and confident attitude,” GFRIEND told Elite Daily of the song’s lyrics. They also added that writing alongside FRANTS and Bang was intimidating but rewarding. “We learned a lot just by participating in the creative process with the veterans,” they said.

In the accompanying music video for “Mago,” the group head to a dreamy discotheque where they show off their pole-dancing skills in sparkly, retro-inspired outfits. At one point, Yuju even swings from a disco ball.

回: Walpurgis Night includes tracks from their July EP, 回: Song of the Sirens. The album is the follow-up to GFriend’s 2019 sophomore LP, Time for Us.
