Fiona Apple has always gone for the heartstrings, but her latest song may just be her most emotional yet. “I Can’t Wait to Meet You” is a lullaby that tells the sweet story of an expecting mother and her rising anticipation of meeting her child for the first time.
It wasn’t, however, written by Apple. Solangie Jimenez is the real-life mom behind the plaintive lyrics like “I can’t wait to meet you for the first time / I don’t know what I’ll do that day / I’ll cry and I’ll laugh and I’ll kiss you.” Sweet nothings, sure, but Apple gives lift and heft to the tune with her husky range and plucks of an acoustic guitar.
“I Can’t Wait to Meet You” is Apple’s first track since her 2016 collaboration with Andrew Bird. It’s off Hopes & Dreams: The Lullaby Project, a compilation of songs written by expecting mothers but performed by musicians. And the Grammy Award-winning artist is in good company, joining Natalie Merchant, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Dianne Reeves on the record.
