Brisbane artist Eves Karydas has returned with a vibrant and upbeat new single, “Complicated.”
On the song, Karydas laments her unfulfilling life and how it has turned out far from what she envisioned and hoped. “When did everything here get so fucking complicated? / Used to laugh at nothing, don’t know how I got this jaded / Thought it was fine / Thought we had time / But we feel dated / When did everything here get so fucking complicated?” she sings over effervescent pop production.
In the accompanying music video, directed by Mick Soiza, Karydas wanders around a house, singing to motionless individuals with stoic expressions.
Karydas co-wrote “Complicated” in Stockholm with Calle Lehmann and Max Thulin, and enlisted Magnus Lidehäll (who has worked with Katy Perry and Galantis) to produce the track.
The song’s origins lay in a dream Karydas had, she explained in a statement, in which her teeth were falling out. “I Googled it and it told me I had an inferiority complex, which I thought was so funny. So, I went and I told the guys, ‘We should write about this and not make it super serious.’ They were like, ‘Yeah cool, let’s do it!’ It was one of those lightning bolt moments that happen every so often where there’s no struggle whatsoever and the song just writes itself,” she said.
“Complicated” follows Karydas’ 2018 debut album Summerskin, which featured the ARIA Gold-certified record “Further Than the Planes Fly,” as well as “Couch,” “Damn Loyal” and “Wildest Ones.”
