Dua Lipa demands justice on “Swan Song”

As part of the upcoming ‘Alita: Battle Angel’ soundtrack.

For her new track “Swan Song,” Dua Lipa’s stepped away from the sassy, danceable sound that she’s become known for.

Released as part of the upcoming original motion picture soundtrack for Alita: Battle Angel, “Swan Song” is a broody, electronic-influenced war cry for justice. Lipa is defiant and dramatic as she proclaims, “This is not a swan song / We just gotta hold on tonight,” over a swelling production of drums and strings.

It’s an apt song for a film about a heroine who finds her power and purpose in a dystopian future—and in the track’s accompanying video, Lipa mirrors Alita’s story.

Set in the future, where Earth is a wasteland, the pop star and her crew of dancers deliver choreography with plenty of swag. Director Floria Sigismondi explained, “Alita is quite literally on a journey to discover who she is. Her story serves as a really powerful allegory for any girl who doesn’t yet know her own power. I wanted to play with that same profound notion by dropping Dua into a facet of Alita’s world and allowing Alita to serve as a surrogate that leads her on a journey to discover she’s stronger than she ever could have imagined.”
